The island lies just 55 miles off the coast of Florida and rambles on for 96 miles, rimmed with cities, villages, and cays that offer lasting evidence of the many different people and cultures that have called Grand Bahama Island home.
Grand Bahama Island is a unique destination. Grand Bahama is the home of Freeport/Lucaya, the nation's second city, with a faster pace and a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than the old-world sophistication of Nassau.
Freeport/Lucaya offers fabulous beaches, exciting nightlife, a lively casino, duty free shopping, and gourmet dining and is a sportsman's paradise, with championship golf, tennis, scuba diving, and fishing.
Freeport/Lucaya boasts Port Lucaya Marketplace and the International Bazaar for shopping and dining. Home to a variety of restaurants and bars, plus live entertainment featuring local bands and dancing. On certain nights, there is music and audience participation, and on Fridays there is the "Tropical Beats Live Bahamian Cultural Show," featuring fire dancing, limbo and the Port Lucaya Dancers. There are additional activities on special occasions and holidays. The square officially closes every night at midnight.
West End is the oldest city on Grand Bahama Island and is considered its historical capital. West End's biggest heyday was during the United States Prohibition. In the then liquor-smuggling town, warehouses and bars sprang up almost overnight, and you can see some of their ruins along the waterfront road.
Close to West End the new development at the established luxury resort and marina, Old Bahama Bay (now Ginn Old Bahama Bay), will soon include a golf course, spa, casino and condominiums.
